Hydrocyclones are used for sewage sludge degritting in applications requiring high efficiency and a high degree of grit removal. ... [In] the hydrocyclone ... the feed is introduced tangentially to a cylindrical feed section, and the liquid slurry develops a rotational movement and passes into a conical section. The centrifugal force created by the cyclonic movement of the liquid forces the heavier solid particles to the outer wall.

OBS

The terms "cyclone separator", "cyclone collector" and "cyclone" are often used as synonyms of "hydrocyclone". They are however generic with respect to "hydrocyclone" because whereas in hydrocyclones the solids are separated from a liquid, in the others the solids are separated from either a liquid or air mixture.

Cyclone separators, located above the tube bundle, dry the steam by giving the steam/water mixture a swirling centrifugal motion. The water, being denser than steam, moves to the outside area of the separator and is drained off. The steam that leaves the top of the cyclone separators has low moisture content but is still unacceptable for use in the turbine.

Les séparateurs cyclones situés au dessus du faisceau de tubes assèchent la vapeur en imprimant un mouvement centrifuge au mélange vapeur-eau. L'eau, plus dense que la vapeur, est projetée à l'extérieur du séparateur et est évacuée par écoulement. La teneur en eau de la vapeur qui s'échappe du sommet des séparateurs cyclones, bien que faible, est encore trop élevée pour la turbine.

A device used in processing for collecting a solid product from a stream of air. The air and product enter tangentially at the top of the machine and descend with a circular motion. The product is separated by centrifugal force during the descent and the clean air ascends in a tight vortex at the middle of the machine and is released.
